Modern shopping mall in traditional urban fabric.

In the lively Beijing street Xisi, well known for wedding fashion e.g., a modern shopping mall is intended. But the neighborhood consists of traditional 1-storey courtyard houses.
By cautious design the charakter of this typical Old Beijing quater and some heritage courtyards is preserved.
The shopping mall creates a buffer between the courtyard houses and the busy street. The new shopping lanes und squares are oriented towards the preserved old trees and buildings, forming entrances to the quarter. Also scale and materiality of the new structures mediate between tradition und modernity.
